Besides 100% gold, 14k gold filled is the best material to use for jewelry making. Gold filled stays beautiful, when used correctly, for a lifetime. Gold filled is also well tolerated by people with allergies.
Gold filled means that there is a layer of 14k gold mechanically fixed to a base material by heat and pressure. This base material is most of the time copper. The thickness of the gold must be at least 1/20 of the total weight. This gold layer is therefore many times thicker than gold plated or other similar materials.
Gold plated parts include a gold layer which shines beautifully. But this layer is not as thick as the 14k gold filled materials and will wear out eventually. This depends greatly on how you handle the jewelry and the acidity of the skin.
Designer quality material is beautiful material with many possibilities, but is the least durable of the used metals. With designer quality material real gold is mixed with a base metal. When used properly, this material will remain beautiful.
